New Google Offices to Open in Seattle, Doubles Down in Kirkland

The tech war on office space in Seattle continues to heat up.   Google is set to expand their offices in Seattle, namely in South Lake Union, and their biggest announcement is their larger expansion in Kirkland.  They will be close to 2 million square feet of space spread across the Greater Seattle area.  With this amount of space, Google can house about 10,000 employees.

Let’s take a look at all of Google’s up and coming campuses.

In Seattle, Google’s cloud campus is set to open soon.  This sprawling 930,000 square feet of space is right in the backyard of Amazonia, or the South Lake Union neighborhood.  Once open, most of Google’s employees will move to its newest building but Google is not yet letting go of their offices they have in Fremont.  About 5 years ago, Google subleased Tableau’s former headquarters and continued expanding in Fremont.  They have about 50,000 square feet and housed about 3,000 employees.

Just a few years ago, Google expanded into Kirkland.  Their expansion there was modest.  Now, reports are saying Google will have about one million square feet of space in Kirkland.  It was rumored that Google would purchase space in the Kirkland Urban project but now it seems they are also building out a new floor in another building.

In what feels like another war with Amazon, Google leased about 80,000 square feet of space in Bellevue.  It has been known that Amazon is rapidly growing in Bellevue, as previously mentioned in another blog.  Google’s space will be in downtown Bellevue, close to the buildings Amazon are building.  Google has plans to lease an additional 30,000 square feet of space in Bellevue.  Location has not yet been determined for the new space, but I have no doubt it’ll be on the heels of Amazon’s locations.

The Greater Seattle area continues to grow – in new residents and new companies expanding or current companies expanding.  The next couple of years will find millions of new office space in Seattle, Bellevue, and Kirkland.  This will bring thousands of new jobs and a greater demand in housing.
